WHY IS
PRONUNCIATION NECESSARY?
Before we start a course of English, it is
necessary to have a clear idea about communication. Communication is the
process by which people Exchange information or express their thoughts and
feelings.
Language is a means of communication.
It has three components:
a. STRUCTURES: (the patterns that can be seen in
these are usually called the grammar of the language).
b. WORDS: that convey meaning (vocabulary or
lexis).
c. SOUND, STRESS and
INTONATION PATTERNS:
which combine to make up “pronunciation”
If you communicate only through the written
word, you will need only the first two of these components. If, on the other
hand, you want to be able to understand the spoken language, and to be
understood, you will need all three components.
A child can get what it wants by pointing and
saying ´Da! Da!, or screaming till it gets it. But a child soon learns that
there are better ways of conveying its needs, and later, that the world and
human thought and emotions are far too complex to be expressed merely by
pointing or screaming.
Ideally, all three components of language
should go hand in hand from the very beginning. If the unfamiliar sounds and
pronunciation patterns are mastered early, they become so natural that is seems
unnatural to say them incorrectly. All that is left to learn is where the
stress lies and how some of the more unusual words are said.
Communication is a
two- way process:
1 1. Understanding other people when they
speak. For this we need.
a.Knowledge b. Awareness, sensitivity
2 2. conveying
what you want to say so that other people can understand you. For this we need:
a.Knowledge b) Awareness* c) Control
*awareness(noun) the stateor level of
