SURVIVING IN THE WILDERNESS

Many people enjoy travelling through wild and deserted landscapes, but few expect to end up in a genuine survival situation. The unexpected occasionally happens, however, so you should be prepared. Imagine finding yourself in the middle of a wilderness with a broken- down jeep and hardly any food and water what should your priorities be? Should you stay with your vehicle and hope to be rescued?  Or should you search for civilization and risk getting even more lost? Should you spend time searching for water or food first ? Or should you postpone worrying about food and water until you have managed to find or build a shelter? If you are not sure, keep reading- this article could save your life!

 SHELTER

Do not put off making a shelter- it should be your first priority. Try enlarging and existing, natural shelter, such as a hole in the ground below a fallen tree. If you happen to be near a rocky coast, build a shelter and cover it with wood from the beach. If you are on the move, stop to build your shelter while it is still light.

*Shelter (noun) a refuge, haven or other cover or protection from something. refugio

 WATER

If you fail to find water, you will only survive for about three days (whereas you can survive for weeks without food). If there is no rain, try walking through vegetation early in the morning to collect moisture in clothing. Avoid drinking water that looks or smell bad.

*Water (noun) a chemical found at room temperature and pressure. agua

  FIRE

Fire has many uses. It makes food more appetizing. If you can´t face eating raw worms, boil them in water to make a nourishing soup! Fire protects against dangerous animals, since many will not dare to approach it.
In addition, you can use it for signaling to rescuers- before they give up looking for you!

*Fire (noun) chemical reaction involving the bonding of oxygen with carbon or other fuel. fuego

  FOOD

It is quite easy to get food in the wild, if you know where to look. Many survival books suggest eating a small amount of unknown plants to test if they are poisonous. However, we do not recommend doing this, since some plants are so poisonous that even a very small amount can cause serious health problems.

*Food (noun) any substance that can be consumed by living organisms. Comida

WHY IS PRONUNCIATION NECESSARY?

Before we start a course of English, it is necessary to have a clear idea about communication. Communication is the process by which people Exchange information or express their thoughts and feelings.

Language is a means of communication. It has three components:

a. STRUCTURES: (the patterns that can be seen in these are usually called the grammar of the language).

b. WORDS: that convey meaning (vocabulary or lexis).

c. SOUND, STRESS and INTONATION PATTERNS: which combine to make up “pronunciation”

If you communicate only through the written word, you will need only the first two of these components. If, on the other hand, you want to be able to understand the spoken language, and to be understood, you will need all three components.
A child can get what it wants by pointing and saying ´Da! Da!, or screaming till it gets it. But a child soon learns that there are better ways of conveying its needs, and later, that the world and human thought and emotions are far too complex to be expressed merely by pointing or screaming.
Ideally, all three components of language should go hand in hand from the very beginning. If the unfamiliar sounds and pronunciation patterns are mastered early, they become so natural that is seems unnatural to say them incorrectly. All that is left to learn is where the stress lies and how some of the more unusual words are said.

Communication is a two- way process:

1   1.  Understanding other people when they speak. For this we need.

a.Knowledge        b.  Awareness, sensitivity

2   2. conveying what you want to say so that other people can understand you. For this we need:

a.Knowledge        b) Awareness*                          c) Control

*awareness(noun) the stateor level of consciousness.Conciencia
